Fast electromagnetic transients from switching, faults and lightning determine the insulation levels and stresses equipment has to withstand. We build detailed EMT models in PSCAD to capture switching and temporary overvoltages, carry out insulation coordination to TGN 288E, and select and place surge arresters.
EMT modelling is now central to Grid Code compliance too: we deliver the manufacturer-validated EMT models and studies NESO requires under GC0141 and GC0168, including fault ride-through and control interaction. For reactor and cable switching we add TRV and RRRV checks to confirm the circuit breakers are correctly rated.
