Azimuth Drives – Saga Cruise Lines – Due Diligence Study

Aurora has been appointed by Saga Cruise Lines to undertake a Due Diligence study in relation to the possibility of using 2x 6.5MW, 6.6kV electric propulsion and azimuth drives, to replace the classic diesel engines and rudder system, for two cruise liners that are under construction. The use of azimuth drive technology is becoming increasingly popular in both commercial and military vessels but has suffered from several recent high profile failures and is therefore distrusted by many companies.

As part of the due diligence process Aurora will undertake a careful review of the vendors proposed design of the converter transformer, VSD, slip ring transmitter and permanently excited motor. As part of the due diligence process Aurora will undertake a complete review of the Vendor proposal as well as attend their design office and manufacturing facility in Germany.
