Stephen Sommerville
Managing Director
BA, BSc, MA, MEng, CEng, MIET

Stephen is the Director of Aurora Power Consulting and has 25+ years of experience in power system analysis and design, gained from working in a number of different industries including Consultancy, Transmission & Distribution and Oil and Gas. He has a wealth of experience of different kinds of systems and configurations from LV up to 400kV. Stephen's primary role is running the day to day business of Aurora, but is also an expert user of DIgSILENT, ETAP and PSCAD and still manages to find time to carry out some power system studies. His interests include power system stability, EMT modelling and control systems. He is a regular member of several review and oversight panels and sits on the DER forum and Grid Code Development Forum contributing to various standards used within the UK. Stephen is also actively pursuing a PhD in electrical engineering at Brunel University, in the field of power system stability and renewable power integration, with a particular interest in sub-synchronous oscillations (SSO) associated with IBRs. Stephen is currently leading the development and deployment of AI within Aurora.

Craig McGlone
Head of Operations
MEng, MIET

Craig is an experienced power systems engineer with 12+ years’ experience and a proven track record of management and project delivery within the electricity supply industry. He has experience in the design and modelling of power systems from LV up to and including 400 kV. He has worked in numerous different design areas including renewable power, data centres, nuclear, transmission and distribution and rail. His experience includes roles as the Consultancy Manager for Burns & McDonnell and as a senior consultant at TNEI and 1898 & Co. with experience including power system studies in DIgSILENT, PSCAD, IPSA, ETAP and SKM along with earthing studies in CDEGS. Analysis has included all design stages from concept development to full detail design. Craig has a particular interest in control systems design and configuration.

Ross Falconer
Head of Power Systems
BE, BSc, MSc, CEng, MIET

Ross is a chartered electrical engineer with over 15 years’ experience working in the electrical power systems industry for DNO’s, an ICP, and consultancy companies both in the United Kingdom and in New Zealand. Having completed his undergraduate studies in electrical engineering at Canterbury in New Zealand, he then went on to complete a MSc in Electrical Power Systems at the University of Bath. He has experience of HV and EHV design and power system studies and simulation using DIgSILENT and IPSA as well as earthing studies using the CDEGS design suite. Ross is skilled in the design and analysis of high voltage electrical systems, including both primary plant and secondary protection & control systems, with a particular focus on G99 and Grid Code compliance. As Head of Power Systems, Ross is responsible for leading the System Studies Engineers to produce high-quality reports based on technically sound analysis of electrical power systems that informs our clients in a clear manner, removing uncertainty from their decision making.

Dr Yingxun Zhou
Principal Consultant

Dr Yingxun Zhou is a Principal Consultant Electrical Design Engineer and has over 15 years’ experience in power system modelling and analysis, gained from work at NG ESO (now NESO), with responsibility for introducing DIgSILENT to within NESO, and operational considerations for day ahead planning. He has gained experience in product development and network innovations from both SSE and OVO energy. Yingxun is enthusiastic about the role of big data and the convergence between economics and financial instruments and power system analysis. His areas of interest include real time planning, curtailment analysis, frequency analysis of large systems and the role of AI, scripting and automation for large data systems and networks.

Jesus de Albornoz Alvarez
Power System Studies Team Leader
BSc, MSc, MIET

Jesus is a highly skilled Power System Studies engineer with over 13 years’ experience in power system analysis and HV design, gained from working on a variety of large-scale industrial plants and power stations, with a cumulative total of over 1200 MW. Jesus particularly enjoys helping to develop and train junior members of the team and watching them grow in confidence and ability. He is an expert user of DIgSILENT PowerFactory, SKM Powertools, ETAP, PSCAD and CYMGrd, as well as experienced with packages such as EMTP-RV and Matlab. He enjoys all aspects of power system analysis, with a particular focus in power system transient events.

David Reed
Lead Earthing Engineer
HNC, HND, MIET

David Reed is the Aurora Lead Earthing Consultant, who specializes in earthing analysis and design, as well as lightning protection. He has over 13 years’ experience, in a range of design and project engineering roles for all types of earth and lightning protection systems. His experience covers HV and EHV Earthing design for substations, renewable energy sites, cable sealing end (CSE) compounds, overhead lines and towers and cable joint bays. He also has extensive experience of carrying out soil resistivity surveys, fall of potential tests and carrying out site earthing inspections. David particularly enjoys the more complex areas of earthing and lightning protection including assessment of EHV transmission lines and impressed voltage studies.

Callum Brown
Senior System Studies Engineer
BSc, MEng, MIET

Callum is an experienced Power System Studies engineer with over 7 years’ experience in power system analysis and HV electrical design, gained through both renewable development and consultancy roles. Callum specializes in power system studies such as loadflow, short circuit, P28 voltage studies, G5 harmonics, G99 compliance, Grid Code compliance, protection coordination studies and arc flash analysis. Callum is familiar with ETAP, DIgSILENT PowerFactory and PSCAD. He particularly enjoys developing scripts to automate some of the more tedious aspects of large simulations and has helped develop a number of in house tools.

Hesam Maleki
Senior System Studies Engineer
BSc, MSc, MIET

Hesam Maleki is a Senior System Studies engineer with over 13 years’ experience in designing ancillary electrical systems for hydro-power plants, combined cycle power plant, oil and gas projects and power system analysis. Hesam has undertaken a wide range of power systems studies at Aurora using DIgSILENT, ETAP and CDEGS. Over the last few years he has developed a strong interest in EMT studies with PSCAD, and has successfully carried out a wide range of studies including insulation coordination, Grid Code compliance and analysis of Grid Forming Inverters. Hesam is also an expert user of Python and enjoys using his skills to help automate some of the various studies processes within PSCAD.

Dylan Charles
Senior System Studies Engineer
MEng, MIET

Dylan is a Senior Electrical Studies engineer, with a strong background in HV / EHV design and power system protection systems, with 5+ years’ experience gained from one of the leading UK ICPs. Dylan’s experience includes protection systems design, and panel wiring design, relay programming files, substation design, power systems analysis of static and dynamic studies. Dylan has become a strong user of PSCAD and has enjoyed carrying out a range of insulation coordination studies to look at temporary and switching overvoltage scenarios and the application of surge arresters to renewable energy plants.

Alan Philip Binu
Senior System Studies Engineer
BTech, MSc, MIET

Alan Philip Binu joined Aurora in 2022 as part of our graduate recruitment programme, rising to become a Senior Engineer in early 2026. He has a strong set of skills in power system analysis and modelling techniques in DIgSILENT Powerfactory, ETAP and more recently PSCAD. Alan has completed a number of challenging studies already including several G99 Type C/D studies, protection coordination, and G5.5 Stage 3 harmonic assessments as well as starting to carry out NESO Grid Code compliance studies.

Sarath Shaji
System Studies Engineer

Sarath Shaji joined Aurora in 2023 as a graduate. Sarath has completed a wide range of systems studies including loadflow, short circuit, P28, G5.5 harmonics, G99 Type C/D dynamic studies. Sarath has started taking increasing ownership of projects from a project management perspective and is looking forward to carrying out some more challenging NESO Grid Code compliance studies.

Sanaz Khorshid
System Studies Engineer
BSc, MSc, MIET

Sanaz joined Aurora in 2024 as part of our graduate electrical engineer intake after completing an internship, and quickly became a valuable member of the team and has completed a wide range of studies including loadflow, short circuit, P28, G5 harmonics, G99 Type C/D dynamic studies as well as developing key skills in EHV and HVDC cable sizing after completing some challenging studies using the Cableizer program. Sanaz has a background in physics and studied molecular physics at MSc level, and brings an interesting and new perspective to our studies on fault current interruption, magnetic fields and EMF studies.

Clifford Perera
Graduate Engineer

Clifford joined Aurora in 2026 as part of our graduate electrical engineer intake and is building his skills in DIgSILENT PowerFactory while supporting the delivery of power system studies across the team. He has undertaken a number of loadflow, short circuit, P28 and dynamic studies and is keen to learn more about PSCAD.

Accounts Manager

Zoe is responsible for the most important part of the business - making sure the accounts are up to date and ensuring everything is running smoothly behind the scenes for the day-to-day administration duties that are essential to keeping the business operations running smoothly. She is experienced in a number of different areas and manages both the accounts and business development.
