Keith Hill Windfarm – Grid Code Compliance

Aurora is pleased to announce that we have been awarded a series of studies for the new 4.5MW wind farm at Keith Hill in Edinburgh. This is an interesting new project to install 5x 900kW EWT wind turbines, connected to Scottish Powers network at 33kV.

The studies that Aurora will be undertaking are a Harmonics G5/4 Stage 3 assessment, P28 transformer energisation study, HV earthing study,  as well as a Fault Ride Through (FRT) and reactive power flow study, in order to meet the requirements for Grid Code Compliance for National Grid. The FRT study is used to show how the wind turbines can respond to short circuits and voltage depressions on the supergrid system, and ensure that the wind turbine array can support the network during these events. The reactive power flow study is undertaken to demonstrate that the wind turbine array can provide the necessary range of reactive power, over the specified range of voltages in both leading and lagging operation.

The main power system studies for the DNO and Grid Code Compliance studies will be undertaken using the software package ETAP, but as part of the exercise Aurora will also begin evaluating DigSilent as another software package to site alongside ETAP, as DigSilent has a much greater market penetration in the UK network operator market, and is often ‘preferred’ by DNOs. The P28 study will be undertaken using PSCAD / EMTDC and the earthing study will be carried out with the industry standard CDEGS package.
