As an 11kV consultancy, Aurora has just finished undertaking a series of earthing studies for one our clients, which included a particularly challenging earthing design for a rural 11kV substation located in the middle of an Equestrian centre.
The initial Earth Potential Rise (EPR) was over 4000V, which posed a significant risk to the livestock nearby. Aurora had to undertake a careful design and develop a novel calculation method considering the animals tolerable step voltage to ensure that the livestock were adequately protected from dangerous step voltages. As part of the calculation we determined that a step voltage as low as 40V could prove fatal to a horse, and had to implemented a series of complex protection measures to ensure the livestocks safety.
